The code is only the beginning.

SC01 can be an important part of an early Tesla's story. The exact car still needs research. When you have a car in mind, its VIN tells you how it was built. Learn the codes, the production window, the hardware, and the inspection items that help you judge the vehicle in front of you.

Look up the car you have in mind.

While we specialize in SC01 education, our VIN lookup tool works on any Tesla model, whatever the model year and wherever it was built. Sign up and your account gets three complimentary reports a day.

Lookup

How the car was built

A detailed report is generated from the VIN, everything from the trim and the wheels to the Autopilot hardware, and, in the full report, the battery health*. Use it to show what you are selling or to check what you are buying. If you run a dealership, these reports keep your Tesla inventory consistent.

Code

Which Supercharging code is on the car

The Supercharging code holds a lot of value. SC01, SC04, and SC05 each mean something different and change how a car should be priced, and SC00 clues you in to potential issues.

Report

*The report checks battery state of health (SoH) for Model Y, Model 3 from 2018, Model S from 2021, and Model X from 2022. An eligible car does not always return a usable reading, and Tesla does not report battery SoH for Cybertrucks yet. A lookup and a report show the records available on the day they run. Battery SoH depends on the data Tesla makes available, and the Supercharging code can change, especially on salvage and auction vehicles.

Why the code matters

Similar-looking Supercharging codes can have different transfer rules. Start with eligibility, then verify the code on the car you are researching.

SC01

Unlimited free Supercharging

SC01 is the option code associated with unlimited free Supercharging on certain early Model S and Model X vehicles.

SC05

Transfer status changes the value

SC05 is not the same benefit. Sellers and listings can use “free Supercharging” without explaining which code is on the car or what happens when the title transfers.

2012-2017

A limited production window

SC01 was offered on Model S and Model X during a limited production period. Build timing is a screening step, not confirmation of the code on one vehicle.

Production window used by this guide
The guide uses January 15, 2017 as the order-date cutoff and April 2017 as the delivery boundary for SC01 research. Visible “free supercharging” wording does not identify the code. Check the exact vehicle and Tesla's current policy.

Built by Tesla enthusiasts, for Tesla buyers.

We’re a community of Tesla owners who care about getting the facts right before buying. Sellers often do not know the difference between SC01 and SC05, and buyers can end up overpaying for Supercharging that does not remain with the car after transfer.

Transfer policy is ultimately up to Tesla and can change, so verifying the current status matters.

SC01Guide.com is here to help you navigate that confusion. We have put together what we have learned about eligible models, verification methods, codes, hardware generations, and buyer considerations so you have a useful starting point for your own research.
